Major Lazer

"Work Out or Chill Out?" Banner outside Rio's Estação do Corpo (Body Station) Club.

Summer time and the living’s easy in Rio, where the principle of lazer (“leisure”) dominates workout culture.

In other words, “I am working out and I am enjoying it. At the same time.”

The scenery doesn’t hurt. Six scenes of lazer (pronounced “lahz-AIR”)  in Rio’s South Zone.

Would you lazer at the beach?

Would you lazer in a park?

Minimalist, green and blue so-much-fun versions of  gym-depressing equipment brighten up the Bairro Peixoto plaza in Copacabana. “Priority: Elderly.”

Would you lazer at sunset doing reverse pullups?

Public access workout stations and yoked exhibitionists dot the boardwalk in Ipanema.

Public access lazer in Leblon.

This (update: not members-only!) free, public access club offered classes from capoeira to aerobicising through January 15.

Skate park lazer in Lagoa.

This lagoon behind Ipanema beach is also home to the World’s Largest Floating Christmas Tree.

5 minutes of freestyling lazer with Fernando Pitt.

When he isn’t training the greats, catch him teaching this freestyling class all summer long in the Bairro Peixoto plaza in Copacabana (Monday-Friday, 10am and 5pm). Top of the line gear thanks to Nike.
